Equitant – Retrospekt 2008/2013 Review @ Side-Line Magazine

This review is a bit special to me since Stephane Froidcoeur (Side-Line) is pretty much responsible/suggested getting Equitant signed with EKP. Thanks for your support and strong belief in Equitant Stephane! Op uw gezondheid!

Equitant – Retrospekt 2008/2013 Review (CD Album – EK Product)

Posted on 26/12/13
Genre/Influences: Minimal EBM.

Content: The name of Equitant doesn’t maybe say that much to you, but in just a couple of years it simply became one of Side-Line’s favorite contemporary EBM projects. The reason why you don’t know Equitant yet maybe is because this American project only released digital material.

Equitant is a Texan based minimal-EBM project set up by Raymond D. Heflin. Next to Equitant, Heflin also runs the digital label Black Montanas, which is mainly devoted to the same kind of EBM and a truly passion for analogue gear. This album must be a kind of consecration for this talented composer who finally found a home at EK Product to release his ‘old’ songs on CD format. “Retrospekt 2008/2013” doesn’t bring anything new for all of those who know Equitant and who’re familiar with the discography. But on the other hand it’s pure lust to get all these songs on one disc.

Equitant clearly sounds like a sound bridge between good-old 80s EBM influences and contemporary body-minimalism. The songs might remind you of other artists like Terence Fixmer and Adam-X. there’s a similar taste for minimalism and the love for 80s elements. The cold, analogue atmosphere recovering the songs will for sure evoke good-old souvenirs. The production of the vocals is another typical element reminding me of the golden decade of early EBM. Next to Ray Heflin singing on several tracks you’ll hear a few familiar Equitant-guests like Lea X, Yasmin Gate, Stephan Busche and Bastian.

Getting back to the music you sometimes will recognize elements of DAF and analogue manipulations à la Kraftwerk. The songs often sound simple and repetitive, but the global production simply sounds powerful and murderously efficient.

Equitant has selected some of their finest songs and I here will tip essential cuts like “Dynamique” (English and a French version), Das Menschlicherennen (for all DAF fans), Flash Of Light, “Dynamism” and “Body Vehement”. There’s no real break on this album, but a non-stop energy and dynamism! The choruses are often carried by cold leads bringing EBM-lovers to a state of ultimate excitement. The coldness of the body-songs is often joined by the sterile, but sensual half spoken – half sung vocals of both female guest singers. Equitant sounds hot and sexy and yet that cold and irresistible.

Conclusion: I’ve already heard several essential albums this year, but “Retrospekt 2008/2013” definitely is the last one to add to this selected list of ‘finest records of 2013’. This is a great and pure vintage EBM records releases by one of the last –and still not that renowned genius in the genre!

Best songs: “Dynamique”, Das Menschlicherennen, Flash Of Light, “Dynamism”, “Body Vehement”, Let Me Be On”, “Mekanik”, “Di Minantz Di Inferni”.

Rate: (DP:9) DP.

You don't exactly expect hard techno-EBM coming from Texas...

You don't exactly expect hard techno-EBM coming from Texas (USA) and yet Equitant is a project that has actually been active since the early 1990’s. Equitant stands for high-tech and modern techno-EBM and can be defined as an offspring between bands like Nitzer Ebb & DAF at one side, and a darkened Giorgio Moroder at the other. You can hear what is some of the hardest beats in old school EBM, with a touch of old school techno, and a great deal of hard energy stemming from traditional 1980's electronic music. The mix of both styles is simply irresistible and injects a refreshing boost to the traditional electronic music of today.

Extreme heat and pressure. Glowing, pulsating. An environment that has the ability to create as well as destroy. Complete Control Productions are very proud to welcome you Inside The Volcano. A compilation where young, hot, electro punk acts like Schwefelgelb, Agent Side Grinder and Petra Flurr+Modernista demonstrate how to take a cue from old school influences and still sound totally fresh and thrilling. Industrial legends Portion Control, Ike Yard and Gerechtigkeits Liga refused to follow the herd when they started out at the dawn of the 1980s. They still do, and they remain as relevant and exciting as ever. Techno heroes Thomas P Heckmann, The Horrorist and Adriano Canzian have all contributed crushing dance tracks where old school EBM and furious techno fuse seamlessly. Also represented on Inside The Volcano is the new breed of leftfield dance music with mind blowing tracks from Equitant, Friherren, Diamond Skull District and K-Nitrate. Organic’s dark and beautiful alternative rock is firmly rooted in their post-punk past, while Atomic Playboy and Infiltrator bludgeon listeners into submission with dirty electronics and psychotic howls. The paranoid machine funk of //TENSE// and The Pain Machinery aims for the body as well as the mind, showing why they are at the forefront of the new wave of electronic body music currently wreaking havoc on dancefloors all over the world. Severe Illusion, Arzt+Pfusch, Guilt Trip and NTRSN are expert purveyors of dark, cold electro whereas Solvent and Emu Bomb infuse their darkness with a strong pop sensibility. Most of these 24 tracks are exclusive for this compilation. A few have only been released on vinyl before and some will be featured on upcoming releases.

Equitant – Body Vehement Remixes Review @ Sideline Magazine

Content: “Body Vehement” was one of my favorite releases of 2012. This new EP is a nice bonus filled with remixes. The typical minimal EBM style of Ray Helfin remains rather intact. Equitant likes remixes and “Body Vehement” –just as most of the Equitant releases, has been exposed to this familiar formula.

We first get 9 remixes of the title song by Equitant and other projects. The remixes are quite recognizable featuring the raw and cold EBM sequences and the danceable rhythmic. I personally like both of the Equitant remixes while the “Lia Organa & Electric Prince Remix” is another attention grabber. It sounds powerful and like a kind of back to the essence of the Equitant sound.

We next get 2 remixes of “Das Menschlichen Rennen”, which remains one of the all time best songs of Equitant. It has a kind of DAF-touch –and not only because of the German lyrics, which sounds absolutely mind-blowing. Elite! made an impressive remix of this song, which sounds 100% EBM.

Last, but not least we also get 4 remixes of the great “Dynamique”. This is just one more master song of Equitant featuring sexy French spoken vocals. The remix by Alexander Robotnick is my favorite one for adding a great technoid element on top of the EBM basis. The remix by Jordan Passmore (featuring Lea X) probably is the most surprising remix for being less Equitant-minded. It’s a kind of groovy adaptation from the original song bringing Equitant into a different light.

Conclusion: I personally prefer the original “Body Vehement”-EP, but this “Remixes”-EP is again featuring several outstanding versions. I don’t know if Equitant still is the best hidden secret in EBM land, but all EBM fans who don’t know this band should be ashamed for their ignorance!

Best songs: “Body Vehement (Equitant's V2 Alternate Mix)”, “Body Vehement (Equitant's V2 Remix)”, “Body Vehement (Lia Organa & Electric Prince Remix)”, “Das Menschliche Rennen (feat. Illumine Concrete - Elite! Remix)”, “Dynamique (feat. Bastian - Alexander Robotnick Remix)”.

Equitant - Body Vehement #15 @ Side-Line Reviews (Best of 2012)

SIDE-LINE REVIEWS - BEST OF RELEASES 2012!

This is a very personal and delicate choice! There were a lot of cool releases all over the year, but my number 1 was an easy choice; according to me it's the uncontested winner of 2012! I was hesitating about a lot of releases to get part of the 'top 20' and that's why I also made a list 'Special Mention'. The selection concerns releases we got for the reviews-section! We got more than 700 releases for 2012 dealing with EBM, dark-electornics, dark-ambient, synth-pop, ethereal, industrial, power-noise, IDM, tribal, trance, gothic, new-wave and related genres... so it's a very eclectic 'top 20'.

See you in 2013 for a new 'top 20'! Stéphane Froidcoeur

Inside The Volcano Vol. 1. feat. Equitant's Di Minantz Di Inferni (Complete Control Productions)

Inside The Volcano Vol. 1. CCP2CD001 V/A 2013 - Complete Control Productions (Sweden) feat. Equitant's Di Minantz Di Inferni (2009)

Equitant - Body Vehement Remixes (Act I & II) Set by Equitant Remixed

Equitant – Body Vehement Review @ ReGen Magazine

If you’re someone who’s looking for a new soundtrack to play master and servant with, look no further than Equitant’s Body Vehement. Although this seven track EP is lyrically simplistic and musically repetitive, it creates a dark and looming atmosphere great for dancing or for dirty deeds. Aside from the audio sexuality embodied on Body Vehement, it appears as if Equitant has added yet another way to express emotion through its music. Returning to lend vocals on this EP are Lea X, Yasmin Gate, and Bastian – all have worked with Equitant in the past and continue to lend creative and new ways to enhance the music. Without the alluring and seductive vocals, Body Vehement would be rather stale.

The EP opens with the title track and draws you in with rapid synths and strong yet whispery vocals. There’s a gloomy undertone that runs the entire duration of the track, giving chills to the listener. The sexual yet sensual lyrics mesh well with the darkness of the track. If you’ve heard Equitant before, you’re no stranger to Yasmin Gate, the vocalist on “Let Me Be On.” In 2009, Gate and Equitant created a massive dance floor hit called “That’s All.” In 2012, they’ve created a more subtle yet grooving tune. Much like “Body Vehement,” the vocals are whispery and the music is repetitive, but in all the right ways. This track is a must for fetish ball set lists. The two versions of “Dynamique” are the same song, but dramatically different at the same time due to the vocals. When sung by Lea X, the song takes on a more pop/disco feel, but however sounds somehow more mysterious when Bastian is the one singing. Despite the music being identical, the songs sound entirely different due to the mood the singers set. Lea’s vocals are pure and clear and just outright beautiful. Bastian sings in French, which seems to fit the sexual motif Body Vehement produces. “Das Menschliche Rennen” is a German track featuring Illumine Concrete, adding more culture to an already cultured piece of work and gives the entire EP a little more punch. It doesn’t tend to exhume the same sexual nature the rest of Body Vehement does, but it’s the most danceable track on it. The bouncy beats heard during this song resemble those of an old school Nitzer Ebb album – it’s catchy, fun, and will likely get stuck in your head for hours.

Overall, this is a stellar release for only seven songs. A little more variety would have been preferred in place of a couple of the remixes, but that’s really the only complaint here. For its dark, sexual, and danceable beats, this EP is perfect for the bedroom or the underground nightclub.
