EQUITANT: LIVE RETROSPEKT - Interview with Equitant // Cultural Sono Magazine (Colombia)
Equitant - Interview March 2014 - By Juan David Quintero
Ray Heflin, known as Equitant, is a producer, remixer, DJ and Live Act Performer born in Dallas and owner of the record label Black Montanas. Equitant has worked with artists like: Jonathann Cast, Millimetric, Yasmin Gate, People Theatre, Adriano Canzian, Carretta & Workerpoor, Al Ferox, Alexander Robotnick & Strange Connection...among others. In this interview he talks about his experience, history and expectations of his visit to Colombia and its presentations in Bogotá and Medellin.
You don't exactly expect hard techno-EBM coming from Texas (USA), and yet Equitant is a project that has actually been active since the early 1990’s. Equitant stands for high-tech & modern techno-EBM, and can be defined as an offspring between bands like Nitzer Ebb & DAF at one side, and a darkened Giorgio Moroder at the other. You hear some of the hardest beats in old-school EBM, with a touch of old-school techno, and a great deal of hard energy stemming from 1980's electronic music. The mix of both styles is simply irresistible and injects a refreshing boost to the traditional electronic music of today.
01 Who is Equitant?
The name Equitant came from a project I was in called "Equimanthorn" in 1992 up until 2011. We conjured various sounds similar to movie soundtracks, dark & ambient soundscapes set to improvised vocals and drums. The name followed me into another band I was in from 1991-2002 called ABSU. This was Blackened Speed Metal at its finest. Once I started doing electronic music on my own in 1993 I continued to go under the name Equitant. It was well established, so there was no need to change my name to anything new or different.
02 which is your music genre?
Elektronische Musik! My music is a cold mix of Techno, EBM, Dark Disco & Electro.
03 which was your musical training?
No "real" training ever really. I taught myself to play guitar in 1987, then Bass Guitar in 1988. I was constantly going back and forth on each instrument in ABSU over the years. I started to play around with synthesizers in 1992 or so. I never learned to read music. It was done all "by ear" you could say. Both of my grandmothers were the musical ones in my family. I think I got it from both of them…learning things just by ear and not reading music.
04 How many years have you been playing music?
From 1987-2014...many years now! My mother bought me my first guitar in 1987. It was just a cheap little thing. But, it made me focus on music and get better until I got proper instruments a few years later. So, I can thank her for it!
05 What bands or musicians have been important in your live?
As far as electronic music: (old) Liabach, (old) Die Form, DAF, Nitzer Ebb, (old) Front 242, Kraftwerk & David Carretta.
06 How did you begin in music?
I started Equitant as an ambient dark electronic music project in 1993 with some Boss Pedals, a cheap Casio Synthesizer and a friend’s drum machine. The music was influenced by dark movie soundtracks, and Tangerine Dream. It was not until 2000 that I started making techno/dance influenced music. I was listening to Kraftwerk and German techno...anything from the 1980’s as well. My sound shifted in 2007 to more of an EBM/Dark/Techno you could say. But I enjoy many styles of electronic music, from Horror Disco, to Electro, to New Wave to old school Techno.
07 Which music genres have you experience or play?
Over the many years it could be: Speed Metal, Thrash, Death Metal, Black Metal, Ambient Synth, Electro, Techno, EBM & Dark Disco. And yes, in that very order too!
08 Why your music is so dark?
I’ve always been attracted to darker music from the first time I heard old Bathory, Celtic Frost and Slayer. Those bands opened the gates to my darkness in music. I guess it still sticks with me in the electronic music I am doing today.
09 Where have you been playing your music?
I have only played in Texas and Colombia. Some offers to play in Mexico and England too. Hopefully some shows in Europe will happen soon as well…
10 What people can expect from your show?
You can expect aggression, power & pure energy.
11 What do you like about Colombia? Why?
I have been all over Europe and North America… Colombia is very different to me. It has own feel and own culture. Very similar to Spain or Italy I can say. Colombia has great food, nice people and a REALLY great electronic music scene. I have always been welcomed by Colombia people with open arms…What more could you ask for?
12 What do you want to say to the people who are reading this interview?
Endless thanks for supporting Equitant Colombia!! Thank you very much for the interview!!

Why go to Equitant? // Some words about me @ batbeat.com (Colombia)
(Translated from Spanish to English) // Source: www.batbeat.com.co
Why go to Equitant?
Much has been seen on social networks about the coming of Equitant Bogota and Medellin, some have reference and other artists have definitely never heard. Why take a chance on this event and attend the live performance of Ray Heflin, also known as Equitant? Here are a few reasons that might persuade:
1. An artist that produces and cleverly mixes music Techno, Electro and EBM. His influences reflect clearly the likes of DAF, and is backed by the seal of EBM more important today: EK PRODUCT (home of cult bands like Escalator or Vomito Negro, through other recognized as Autodafeh, Tech Nomader, to name a few).
2. Because if it is not the first time that Equitant visit to Colombia, it is certain that many have not had the opportunity to accompany him on his live. Side-Line Magazines and say it is one of the great promises of modern EBM worldwide. Side-Line has provided the growth of many artists who are now giants in the industrial and Gothic move, and we are sure you are not mistaken in this new statement / prediction, so we should take a giant in the near future is to conquer our ears and turn our senses in various types of dance.
3. Because his music is rich in beats, aggressive bass lines and all that resulted in a real rush of energy for our bodies. One thing to hear songs that bristle our skin from our mp3 players, but quite another to those songs resonate with power in an event dedicated to making us feel the music in the deepest part of our nerves and that is the core business of Equitant. However, only Equitant will see to that. In Bogotá, Darkling, Bluekim, Sonic, James Hates Us & Delectro - U know very well how to make us enjoy electronic music of the highest quality. Similarly, in Medellin Blackangel and excellence P01SED know how to make the dance floor vibrate.
4. Because rare are the times you visit us artists who promote these dark sounds of electronic music. Last year we visited Al Ferox & The Horrorist and this year will Equitant and depends on each of us that those who come are those who have always expected. Bogotá becomes a great place for musicians dedicated to these genres thanks to the efforts of groups such as Industrial Complex, but also thanks to the support of the audience, which is the raw material of an event of any kind.
5. Because it is an event that promises to be an unforgettable party. A Equitant will accompany huge talent and DJs who are promoted locally these sounds. They deserve our support because, as we see great artists beginning to come to our country as Mr. Ray Heflin, also dream of the great promises of Colombia can show their talent beyond national borders - although we know that more than one of these artists has already done it and are proud of them!
6. Because the attendance at these events simply translates to events of major proportions, is a very simple formula and allows all our dreams can eventually become reality.
7. Because we could positively surprised we do not know much. We are sure that in many cases, we hear the music we listen because we decided to venture to make new sounds that ultimately satisfies our insatiable hunger for proper shade and rhythms with the most accurate feelings. Risking know and enjoy in terms of music is always win.
If we come up with more points will enlarge and update this list of points, but we hope that our personal opinion allows them a view of what this event is for us, and no doubt also of what could become if all of you, readers of this article, decided to risk, attend, enjoy and dance until the body does not respond.

Equitant – Retrospekt 2008/2013 Review @ Side-Line Magazine
This review is a bit special to me since Stephane Froidcoeur (Side-Line) is pretty much responsible/suggested getting Equitant signed with EKP. Thanks for your support and strong belief in Equitant Stephane! Op uw gezondheid!
Equitant – Retrospekt 2008/2013 Review (CD Album – EK Product)
Posted on 26/12/13
Genre/Influences: Minimal EBM.
Content: The name of Equitant doesn’t maybe say that much to you, but in just a couple of years it simply became one of Side-Line’s favorite contemporary EBM projects. The reason why you don’t know Equitant yet maybe is because this American project only released digital material.
Equitant is a Texan based minimal-EBM project set up by Raymond D. Heflin. Next to Equitant, Heflin also runs the digital label Black Montanas, which is mainly devoted to the same kind of EBM and a truly passion for analogue gear. This album must be a kind of consecration for this talented composer who finally found a home at EK Product to release his ‘old’ songs on CD format. “Retrospekt 2008/2013” doesn’t bring anything new for all of those who know Equitant and who’re familiar with the discography. But on the other hand it’s pure lust to get all these songs on one disc.
Equitant clearly sounds like a sound bridge between good-old 80s EBM influences and contemporary body-minimalism. The songs might remind you of other artists like Terence Fixmer and Adam-X. there’s a similar taste for minimalism and the love for 80s elements. The cold, analogue atmosphere recovering the songs will for sure evoke good-old souvenirs. The production of the vocals is another typical element reminding me of the golden decade of early EBM. Next to Ray Heflin singing on several tracks you’ll hear a few familiar Equitant-guests like Lea X, Yasmin Gate, Stephan Busche and Bastian.
Getting back to the music you sometimes will recognize elements of DAF and analogue manipulations à la Kraftwerk. The songs often sound simple and repetitive, but the global production simply sounds powerful and murderously efficient.
Equitant has selected some of their finest songs and I here will tip essential cuts like “Dynamique” (English and a French version), Das Menschlicherennen (for all DAF fans), Flash Of Light, “Dynamism” and “Body Vehement”. There’s no real break on this album, but a non-stop energy and dynamism! The choruses are often carried by cold leads bringing EBM-lovers to a state of ultimate excitement. The coldness of the body-songs is often joined by the sterile, but sensual half spoken – half sung vocals of both female guest singers. Equitant sounds hot and sexy and yet that cold and irresistible.
Conclusion: I’ve already heard several essential albums this year, but “Retrospekt 2008/2013” definitely is the last one to add to this selected list of ‘finest records of 2013’. This is a great and pure vintage EBM records releases by one of the last –and still not that renowned genius in the genre!
Best songs: “Dynamique”, Das Menschlicherennen, Flash Of Light, “Dynamism”, “Body Vehement”, Let Me Be On”, “Mekanik”, “Di Minantz Di Inferni”.
Rate: (DP:9) DP.
